Doing Something Different

Phew. I’m back in the saddle after a couple of days on the couch. Being in the medical field, I could always see that back pain/spasms weren’t fun. Now I can testify to the fact. Thanks to all those who said a prayer on my behalf – it is working!

In other news, my little church did something a little different yesterday. We had been talking for a while, wondering what would happen if instead of going to church we tried to get out and be the church. We’ve got a good core group that tries to shine light in our every day lives, but what if we did something different and a little bit radical as a body?

So, instead of having a church service, we went out to the local park next to the lake. Despite a “rather blustery day” as Pooh might call it, we set up in the central gazebo. After doing some prayer walking around different parts of the park, we put up signs advertising “Free BBQ” and started cooking for any who would come.

The day turned out really well. We had a steady trickle of folks from 12-4. Nothing overwhelming at one time, but we ran out of food at the end! We had cops, bike riders, families, a guy w/the cardboard sign looking for work, and skaters all stop by for a burger, hot dog, or glass of lemonade. We got to visit with several people. At least two families said they wanted to check out our church after this.

It seemed like a simple thing – go bless people. I have to believe it was more profound than that, both in our hearts and the people who witnessed it. We’ll see what comes of it, but the main thing to us was the idea that “obedience is better than sacrifice.” God is good, and we didn’t get blown north.

Anyone else have stories like this? How did it go?

Pledge Drive

I listen to Air 1 all day streaming it at work. The alternative music channel plays some great Christian music and has a pretty good ministry side as well. They are listener supported (thus no commercials), but their last pledge drive only hit about 75%. Its sister station K-Love (which is a little too syrupy for my tastes) is in a similar situation.

If you listen to either of these stations, consider supporting them with a gift or a pledge of monthly support. Here’s for Air 1, here’s for K-Love.

Funny story: my youngest’s name is Caleb. When he was a baby we’d sometimes listen to K-Love in the car. My older boys thought it was cool that the radio was always singing to their younger brother…

Later today, I’ll be posting for the CSFF tour, so check back!

Musical Minstrel of Ministry

I was blessed yesterday and today by a visiting speaker, Dick Williams. This man of God travels around with a gentle prophetic ministry of encouragement and exhorting the body of Christ. If you’ve never heard him, he’s unlike any speaker I’ve ever heard.

He usually ministers with guitar in hand. As he talks, he strums gently on his 12-string, and often launches into song. He is poetic and lyrical in how he presents the truth of God. He is also quite gifted in how he gives personal words of edification to people in the audience. He doesn’t know me from Adam, but he spoke a word to me yesterday that was spot on.

He talked about the ministry of the prophetic, which can be a controversial topic. However, he presented it with grace and making it understandable without a “Twilight Zone” factor. To quote Dick:

The testimony of Jesus (Rev. 19:10) is what He Himself communicates to people and prophetically through people. Therefore, truth spoken prophetically will be permeated with who Jesus is. He is majesty, might, light, and love. One or more of all of these ingredients will characterize true prophetic communication.

I could really launch into a lot of posts regarding what he taught, but that’s not my intention. But if anyone is curious and wants to ask questions, leave a comment and we’ll discuss it privately.
