A Few Good Posts

A Few Good Posts

Amazing how a holiday throws a person out of sync…

Anyhoo.

I came across a few interesting posts last week I wanted to share. Food for thought. I don’t necessarily agree 100% with everything, but I’m always up for seeing people think about issues!
I recently found an old internet pal (old being relative on the net…) was blogging regularly about writing. I’d like to introduce you to Athena Grayson, and she has a great post on evaluating your beliefs as a writer, and trying to understand the opposite perception. We all have messages to share in our fiction, and we don’t want them to be preachy. If we can see other views a little more, we can work more realistic and rounded characters into our stories. Good stuff – especially since it references The Schwartz!
Mike Duran, the ever-linkable blogger and author, has done it again. Out of his post “Did Flannery O’Connor Write Christian Fiction?” came another provocative post, “On Taking the Lord’s Name in Vain.” I encourage everyone to check out the second post especially, but both are instructive and the O’Connor post led to the second one.

Finally, I saw that Novel Journey was announcing some major changes. It seems they are rebranding somewhat to be bigger and better, and are now known as Novel Rocket! It seems the journey gets a boost here – so check out the new swag!
There’s always good stuff out there for the writing world (since if we’re not writing books, we’re writing blogs. Or tweets. Or cereal boxes…) I’ll try to keep the best ones coming to your attention.

Linked up

Every so often I will post some writing related links that I have enjoyed over the last week. There’s plenty of info out there, but some of it is worth repeating.

Have you ever been told to “kill your darlings?” If so, you might be a writer, and you should check out this post from Wendy Palmer.

What kind of story do you want to tell? It may come down to if you are a dreamer or a keeper.

If you have other good articles/links, leave a comment or shoot me a message, and I can put them here.

File Under “Ironic”

File Under “Ironic”

I have to give a belated thanks to my blogging buddy Becky Miller. She nominated me for a “Prolific Blogger” Award back on 2/15. The criteria is: here’s what the award stands for: “A prolific blogger is one who is intellectually productive… keeping up an active blog that is filled with enjoyable content.”

Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling especially prolific at the time, and I didn’t feel I deserved the award!

Ah well. I am going on four years of posting regularly, so I guess I have met that criteria. The blog has had ups and downs, and lately I haven’t had a lot of original ideas to talk about. Still, I’m grateful that Becky nominated me.

I also put off talking about it as I couldn’t really meet the criteria for passing it on. It asks to refer this award to seven other bloggers. Yikes. I don’t have time to read that many blogs anymore, and Becky already took a couple of people I would nominate!

Here are the rules:

1. Every winner of the Prolific Blogger Award has to pass on this award to at least seven other deserving prolific bloggers. Spread some love!

2. Each Prolific Blogger must link to the blog (A Christian Worldview of Fiction) from which he/she has received the award.

3. Every Prolific Blogger must link back to This Post, which explains the origins and motivation for the award.

4. Every Prolific Blogger must visit this post and add his/her name in the Mr. Linky, so that we all can get to know the other winners.

So the people that I can say that I read regularly and enjoy, other than Becky Miller’s blog, are:

Mike Duran – Decompose

Brandilyn Collins – Forensics and Faith

Jenny Simmons (lead singer for Addison Road) – Jenny’s Blog

Check them out if you are so inclined, for each posts regularly with insightful stuff!

CSFF Tour – Digital Dragon Magazine

CSFF Tour – Digital Dragon Magazine

Do you have a hankering for hearty tales? Do you fear a lack of family values in your fantasy fiction? Well, look no further.

The CSFF (Christian Sci-fi and Fantasy) tour is having as our last feature for 2009 The Digital Dragon Magazine. The tour is a little discombobulated this month, as our fearless leader, Becky Miller, has a busted computer, so we don’t have our typical list of participants. However, that doesn’t take away from a quality feature.

Digital Dragon Magazine has a specific mission:
To seek out quality, family-friendly speculative and fantasy fiction, to find new talent in these genres and present that talent to a new, growing audience.

It started in June of 2009, with monthly issues featuring short stories, reviews, author interviews, and discussions about speculative fiction. The Vault page shows the quality art submissions they have had for their covers. Pretty impressive visuals for a brand new project.

I’d like to specifically highlight some stories from my comrades in the CSFF Tour.

Angel Wings by Fred Warren was developed from a flash fiction story he wrote. It is a poignant look at the future and some things, like teenagers, that won’t change much in the future.

The Seeker by Brandon Barr is an imaginative tale of an intergalactic creature that is picked up in camouflage form by a young school girl. Her empathy brings provides the way to healing for our mysterious seeker.

Second Site by Grace Bridges uses a little word play and an unexpected twist when a problem student visits his professor.

I haven’t read all that Digital Dragon has to offer, but many of the features that are easy reads that provoke some thought into life. The stories have little weaknesses, but overall they are entertaining enough, and perhaps important in the Digital Age, short enough to capture our short attention spans. The site specializes in stories less than 1500 words, so it is more of a fiction morsel to snack on rather than a full meal deal.

Usually I end with a list of participants. Like I said, I don’t have an official list, but I’m posting the “usual subjects” where you have a fair chance of finding more on Digital Dragon Magazine. Since it is during the holidays there might not be as much as usual, but I know that Fred Warren has a couple of posts on it.
